Liverpool fans, and in particular The Kop, are known as one of the most passionate and vociferous set of supporters throughout football. Everyone in football knows about and have heard the famous Liverpool anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone". 

"You'll Never Walk Alone" was in fact originally a show tune from the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel. The song's history in the United Kingdom goes back as far as 1963 when the song's most successful recording was released by the Liverpool group Gerry and the Pacemakers (peaking at number one in the singles chart for four consecutive weeks).

Very soon after its chart success the song became Liverpool's anthem and is sung by the fans moments before the start of each game. The words "You'll Never Walk Alone" do not only identify the club's anthem, it also featured in the club crest and on the entrance through the Shankly Gates. Liverpool legend Tommy Smith has said that Gerry Marsden presented Liverpool manager Bill Shankly with a tape recording of his single during a pre-season coach trip in the summer of 1963.

Apparently, Shankly was truly impressed and in awe of what he heard. Football writers on the trip said that this was when the song was adopted as the club's song. Gerry Marsden himself told BBC Radio how, in the 1960s, the DJ at Anfield would play the top-ten best selling singles at that time in ascending order, with the number one single being played last, just before kick-off.

The Anfield spectators would sing along, but unlike with other hit singles, when "You'll Never Walk Alone" dropped out of the top-ten, instead of dropping the song, Liverpool fans, and in particular The Kop, continued to sing along.
